winter classes at clay wood & cotton (beacon, NY)

Winter Class Lineup

We've put together an amazing lineup of Saturday classes to help you beat the winter blues. There's something for everyone — make something with yarn, paper, wool and more!

Classes make great gifts! We can hook you up with a gift certificate for one of these great classes. We're open all day, 11:30am until 9pm tomorrow, Christmas Eve.

January
  • Bookbinding, 1/16, 5:30-9:30pm. Learn to make your own books with Nic Taylor, one half of Garrison's Thunderwing Press. In this 4-hour workshop, attendees will become accustomed with the philosophy and art of both Eastern and Western bookbinding, the materials used in construction, as well as have an opportunity to create their very own original bound book.
  • Make Your Own Greeting Cards, 1/23. Use techniques like collage and your own custom stamps to create your very own line of cards! This is a great class for teens and older artsy kids as well— 10 and over welcome with a grown-up, 13 and over welcome solo.
  • Crochet 101, 1/30. Never picked up a crochet hook before? We’ll get you started in this 2-hour class. You’ll learn the basic stitches and get going on a simple project—and get the pattern to take home! $15 materials fee, optional.
February
  • Needle Felting, 2/6, $10 materials fee. Learn to make soft creatures, pendants, ornaments, or anything you like by "sculpting" with wool and a special felting needle. We're hosting Nguyen Le, the fiber artist behind KnitKnit whose work has received national coverage, as the instructor for this class.
  • Embroidery, 2/13, $10 materials fee. Learn the basics of embroidery with crafter and maker extrordinaire Cal Patch of Hodge Podge Farm. Practice your new skills on an original Valentine's Day pattern.
  • Knitting Class: Superstar Hat with Jill Draper, 2/20, materials optional (see note). Afraid to use circulars or double points? This super easy hat is knit sideways on two needles with one seam. Even if you are a hat knitting pro, this is a fun twist on the classic cap.
  • Soap Making For Kids, 2/27. Bring the kids in to learn to make soap with Tara and Jeff, who make the luscious Meow Meow Tweet line of soaps.
We've got more on the way in March — more knitting, appliqué, kids' jewelry and monster making. We'll be announcing them soon, you can also bookmark our Google calendar.

About our classes:

All classes are 10:30am-12:30pm unless otherwise noted. All our classes are $40 + materials fee if applicable.

Knitting & Crochet: Students may bring their own supplies, call or email info@claywoodandcotton.com for details.

seedy art opening

i am really bummed that i won't be able to attend the unveiling of the new seed packet artwork for next year's hudson valley seed library packets. the put out a call for artists earlier this year and now the works have been chosen and will be shown at Roos Arts in Rosendale on november 14. sadly, i will be teaching that weekend down in the city...

news from the {NewNew}

Fall in Love with Handmade Goodness
Celebrate the bounty of Autumn with some fabulous events during the month of October.
NYCraft at Madison Square Market Debut

NYCraft, a collective of seven distinguished artists from The {NewNew}, is participating in the inaugural season of the Madison Square Mark’t at Madison Square Park.

From October 9 through November 1, NYCraft will join more than 60 artists, designers and chefs for a month-long artisan market at historic Madison Square Park. The participants have been specifically selected and curated to offer shoppers the best from independent New York designers and chefs.

“We are excited to be a part of this select showcase of local artists, designers, and chefs during this gorgeous time of the year,” said Kimm Alfonso, team leader, and participating NYCraft designer. “Madison Square Park, the crisp fall weather, pumpkins for the kids, and the best of New York designers makes for a great recipe!”

The Mark’t hours will be 11am-8pm, seven days a week.

Visitors to the NYCraft booth will find Alexandra Ferguson pillows, KimmChi t-shirts, Meegün bags, ceramics by Lorrie Veasey, paper goods by Pretty Stationery for Beautiful Souls, and jewelry by Metalicious and Wabisabi Brooklyn.

Speaking of Crafts and Chelsea

On October 17, The {NewNew} sponsors Crafts in Chelsea, a fall delight of handmade shopping with free food, games and a petting zoo for the kids over at P.S. 11. Shop for Pulp Sushi jewelry, Groundsel handbags, Virginia Kraijevic artwork and Better Than Jam apparel. Click here for a full list of participating vendors, and directions to the school.

Crafts in Chelsea will run from 10am-5pm.

Gotham Returns to Beantown

Not only do New York and Boston share a passion for baseball, the cities share a common appreciation for artisanal goods. The {NewNew} takes another road trip up to Boston's ultra-hip Sowa Openmarket on October 25 after a well-received first run back in August.
The market will be hosting its 6th Annual Vendor/Customer Halloween Costume Contest, so be sure to look for the blue banners admist all the ghosts and goblins.

Sowa Open Market is open from 10am-4pm.

In the midst of all this activity, we're planning our largest and most spectacular Handmade Cavalcade yet, so mark your calendar for Saturday, December 5, 2009. Details to come shortly, and sign up for announcements if you haven't already done so!

i just got a note from heather at Brooklyn Gneral, saying that there is indeed STILL ROOM on the bus to rhinebeck next weekend! if i weren’t already up here i’d be on that bus for sure, so all of you city folks should jump at the chance to see the spectacular fall foliage, pet furry animals and buy lots and lots of fiber and YARN!!! and now here’s what heather has to say:

Hello All,
Some of you may have heard that I am organizing a bus trip to Rhinebeck, NY for the NYS Sheep and Wool Festival next weekend. This amazing event it is a two-day extravaganza with vendors from all over the country. Can you say knitter’s paradise? You can check out http://sheepandwool.com for all the highlights. Here are the details for my bus:
The bus will depart from John Jay HS (7th Ave btwn 4/5th Sts in Park Slope, Brooklyn) at 8 am on Saturday, October 17, 2009.
