Physicists hope that the LHC will help answer the most fundamental questions in physics, concerning the basic laws governing the deep structure of space and time.

"Time Tunnel" proposes a collision of art-making traditions with the uncertainty of time and space. The collective unconscious is infused with ritual and mysticism, and has become dislodged and reinterpreted. The reformed amalgam of paint, wax, clay, sand, and plaster that is presented here are artifacts of this convergence. Totem poles are now made of monster masks, images of prairie women have paint splattered on them, Roman relics are fractured, sand mandalas are blurred, and our spirit animals have been unleashed into the wild.

Mira Billotte is an artist and musician (White Magic) interested in the "Music of the Spheres"; the belief that the planets of the solar system and stars beyond each create a tone in perfect harmony. Mira's installations and sand mandalas reference transcendental rituals practiced throughout time. John Brattin is a multi-media artist who uses sculpture, drawing, and painting to further inform his personal stories and myths which are eventually made into short films. He is currently working on a western. Eric Copeland's collages are visual remnants of his pondering of the moon, phallices, faces, and piles of trash. His abstracted compositions use repetition and disjunction much like the music he is known for making. Jeff Davis's two-dimensional work usually takes on "mysteriously ceremonial and often orgiastic configurations". His totem-like structures are made from casting rubber halloween masks with multi-colored wax. Spencer Herbst's dadaist videos are a microscopic look into our everyday surroundings. His magnification of objects strewn about his apartment, salt crystals lying on a countertop, and wood grain in the floorboards are examined so closely that they take on an other-worldly reality. Pali Kashi's work presents the natural world through the power symbol of the triangle, which grants the viewer a new kind of portal into frozen moments of time. James Kendi's photographic process begins with asking people what their spirit animal is. He then creates a mask of that animal and photographs his subjects wearing the mask in the animal's natural environment. Adam Marnie is a mixed media artist interested in the sculptural presentation of images. By splicing traditional still life painting with pornography, he can sharply pierce us with flashes of flesh where we are expecting to see stems and roses. Keith McCulloch's watercolors meander through a maze-like interior filled with strange yet familiar apparitions. Rich Porter depicts an array of primordial figures, focusing on the unseen molecular network between our bodies and landscape. Leif Ritchey is an archaeologist of the sublime accumulations of his everyday surroundings. The objects he extracts from puddles near a sewer or broken glass hidden under a bush are taken back to his studio to be corralled into his futuristic vision. Arik Roper's work depicts a fantastical reality filled with mythical warriors, smoky terrain, and decaying skulls. His paintings breathe life into our uncharted history. Ruby Sky Stiler rummages the storage cellar of historical artifacts to incorporate classic iconography into the context of her own relics. Her fragmented reliefs of ancient Greek and Roman imagery question the potency of sculpting the human form. Francine Spiegel's performance, The Curse of the Century Old Egg, which took place at Deitch Projects this last fall, was a literal mish-mosh of the past and present. The eerie happening gathered six women together in a curious ritual of transformation. The repetition of slime-dumping and paint-slinging turned these prairie-esque women, in ruffled regalia, into monstrous beasts over the course of an hour.

cal patch in brooklyn this weekend

this friday evening (the 19th) i’ll be visiting my old neighborhood and signing books (with the ever-so-stylish kayte terry) at treehouse. come by and say ‘hi’! you know siri knows how to throw a party, so there’s bound to be yummy snacks and drinks, along with all kinds of handmade loveliness. we’ll be signing from 7:30 to 9:30, and you can buy a book from me or bring in your own copy. i’ll be coming on the bus so i can’t carry a ton, so if you know you want to buy one (they’ll be $20) let me know in advance and i’ll reserve one for you.

design and make your own clothes! in this 2-hour class you will learn the basic principles of making your own sewing patterns, and make a pattern for a T-Shirt that fits your own unique body. with this foundation you’ll be able to sew the projects you envision! basic sewing experience is helpful to get the most from this class.

this introductory lesson in basic flat pattern techniques will give you the basic skills to draft patterns to fit any body! we will take measurements and make a simple skirt pattern with darts, which can be customized in all sorts of ways to suit your personal style.

	Join us Saturday, February 13th, from 10:30-12:30, to learn the basics of embroidery with our special guest instructor Cal Patch. Practice your new skills on an original Valentine's Day pattern created by Cal (sneak peek above). Cost: $40 + $5 materials fee A 50% deposit is required to hold your place in a class. Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the class in order to receive store credit for your deposit. Give us a call or stop by the shop to reserve your spot! About the Instructor: Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, makes patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: hodge podge. Cal has taught all of these subjects for the past ten years, and loves showing people new skills. After seventeen years of being a New York City dweller, Cal recently relocated to the Catskills where she plans to be a crafty farmer. Dear friends,

Hope you are enjoying the snow or are someplace warm and sunny.

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, and really, for any day, a new selection of more than a dozen of my hand-embroidered notes are available at Muriel Guepin Gallery in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. Stitched in my simple handwriting, these notes combine equal parts humour and desire. Phrases like "I carry you with me everywhere. You will always have a place inside me," adorn small pieces of antique lace and inherited textiles.

a show curated by Hanna Fushihara Aron.

February 3rd, 2010 – February 27th
Opening reception – Wednesday, February 3rd from 6 to 8pm

Although "X.O.TRIANGLE.SQUARE" refers to the buttons on a Sony PlayStation
video game controller, the shapes themselves are the most basic abstract
forms used in the past and present as building blocks for creative,
industrious, and even spiritual invention. Korakrit Arunanondchai believes
in the mythic power of these forms and they are often found as focal points
in his work, but he uses his own vocabulary of abstracted shapes as the
cells to his psychedelic, celestial world. Having been raised in Thailand,
Arunanondchai grew up amongst ornate Buddhist temples. His fluid shapes
remind one of their decorative murals but also of Sanskrit or Pali that make
up his native Thai written language. His work evokes the feeling of a
connection between visible and invisible worlds and brings the viewer to a
kind of ceremonial experience with his large and enveloping pieces.

In contrast, Arunanondchai has also been influenced by his love of Japanese
Manga and video game culture. This is evident in the bright colors he
chooses to use as well as the rapid movement frozen in time on canvas or
paper instead of on a television screen. The silk screening process that he
uses also parallels these inspirations in that it creates a flat surface and
removes evidence of the use of hand in their making. The creation of
multiple layers by breaking down the overall image is yet another way for
Korakrit to abstract information and invents a whole new universe.

Korakrit Arunanondchai is a recent graduate of the Rhode Island School of
Design’s Printmaking Department and has worked for both Ryan McGinness
and Rirkrit Tiravanija. He has also worked with Dell Computers on
several Dell Design Studio notebook patterns and has been a featured artist
in the Dell Lounge with accompanying artist’s video which is available for
viewing online. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Hanna Fushihara Aron is an independent curator and former owner of Little
Cakes Gallery in NYC. She has been featured in publications such as The New
York Times, Tokion, Paper Magazine, The Journal, and many others.
