love lies green @ mountain fold

1/21 Opening Reception: Rebeca Raney & Cristina Toro "Love-Lies-Green" @ Mountain Fold
LLG_Cristina_100114
http://www.mfoldgallery.com

Mountain Fold is pleased to announce the opening of "Love-Lies-Green", a two person show by Rebeca Raney and Cristina Toro, guest curated by Hanna Fushihara Aron.

The title for this show "Love-Lies-Green" comes from the name of a variety of amaranth; a plant grown for its high nutritional value as well as its ornamental value. The plants can be so heavily laden with its edible seed heads that they reproduce exponentially every year and in some gardens are considered to be weeds. The amaranth plant could be taken as a symbolic representation of the female, of the fertile mother, whose long cascading flowery arms beckon insects for pollination, who feeds her children with her leaves and grains, who scatters her seed every year, so that next spring she will arise from the ground again surrounded by sisters.

Both women in this show create work that exhibit female qualities of strength through fertility as well as conviction and point of view, connection to nature, a sense of magic, as well as through the power of sharing and giving. Cristina Toro's new work depicts female central figures surrounded by animal guardians within a world of colorful geometry and implied symmetry. We are shown a beautiful world of energy and order brought about not through harsh law or tight reign but birthed from love and compassion and a woman's intuition. Rebeca Raney's soft world features abstract beings with their feelings and emotions depicted in the lines of embroidery thread that adorn their faces. They show their strength and beauty not by hiding or conniving but by showing their emotions to the viewer and sharing parts of themselves.

"Love-Lies-Green" is a show that hopes to scatter the seeds of love, empathy, and self empowerment in a time when even our greatest hopes for prosperity and peace are dwindling slowly like candle light at night.

Gallery hours: Wednesday through Saturday 1:00- 7:00pm or by appointment.
