specimen @ Gifted Market

Hi, Along with the coziness of heated apartments, dinner parties, and mulled wine, the Brooklyn Flea births a new curated collabo with Time Out NY: "Gifted: A Holiday Market" with over 40 vendors! It will be held INDOORS (!) in the majestic Brooklyn Masonic Temple on Vanderbilt, across from the normal Flea location.

There will be 4 Sundays
Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14 + 21, from 11am to 6pm. (The "regular" Flea will of course continue on at the schoolyard during this time, with Dec. 21 remaining our last date of the season.) Specimen will be at "Gifted" the following days: THIS SUNDAY, Nov 30 and Dec 14. THERE WILL BE LOTS OF FRESH NEW GOODS.

If you can't make it to the market, specimen is now available on
ETSY. Don't wait until the last minute to get your gift-giving spirit in full swing! Be smart about how you spend your hard earned, and support local artists and small businesses.

Happy Holidays,

*Carrie

88s and good numbers

Cinders Gallery presents
Unsung: new work by George Ferrandi and John Orth
November 14 - December 28, 2008
Opening Reception: Friday November 14, 7-10 pm

We invite you to come see Unsung. This installation is the first official endeavor of the collective known as "88's" – short for "88's and good numbers" which is CB lingo for "Best Wishes and Regards."

The work in Unsung started with conversations concerning the current presidential campaign. Our plea for a massive paradigm shift had 88's collective members George Ferrandi and John Orth contemplating what parts of their own psyches could use some serious shifting. They started with the imagery they associated with grassroots revolution – daggers, dynamite, pistols, the felled heads of toppled statues, and the closed eyes of innocents. Then they created painted, cast plaster and carved wooden forms that relegate the physical violence of uprising safely to the realm of metaphor, but still speak to a simmering volatility and to the potential for cataclysmic change.

Their latest collaboration, the 88's collective, is a celebration of their complimentary sensibilities and shared interest in delicately adorned pathos, B-movie violence, and small, hyper-sexualized animals.

The two met in Gainesville, Florida where George was a professor at the University of Florida. Soon after meeting, they organized an exhibit at an old train depot. This was the beginning of over a decade of collaborations that have included several national shows, a traveling circus (Cloudseeding Circus of the Performative Object), a comic strip, and an unfortunate summer haircut.

attention prairie girls!

If Laura Ingalls of Walnut Grove owned a street-style jewelz mart similar to any one that currently lines Fulton Street in Brooklyn, she'd fer sure sell our two finger gold-tone daisy ring (with blue gemstone centers.) These mini-knucks are ideal fer a double-braids wearing, wagon-wheel racing, Nellie Oleson fighting, half pint of whispering fury. Or fer you!

Daisy Mini-Knucks
1-3/4" long by 1/2" wide.
Two sizes: 7 and 8

If Laura Ingalls of Walnut Grove owned a street-style jewelz mart similar to any one that currently lines Fulton Street in Brooklyn - and opted to include giant hoop earrings in her everyday Prairie Style, our Daisy Door Knockers earrings would be the clear choice. She'd strategically peek them out from under her bonnet on the wagon ride to the Mercantile, letting Nellie and Willie Oleson know that she means business.

Daisy Door Knockers
$24.00
2 1/2" wide with 1/2" blue gemstone.
