SEWING 101 This class will teach you all the basics: how a sewing machine works, cutting from a pattern, and how to sew a simple wrap skirt or 50's style apron. With these techniques, you'll be on your way to stitching up all kinds of projects! Skills covered include pleats, darts and inserting a zipper. Skills to be learned include princess seams, loops or Button-holes as closure options & lining insertion. Choose the fabric to match the season you desire. You will walk out of this class in high style and with more sewing skills. A perfect option for those of you with tight schedules who can't commit to a full class. More workshops to be announced soon! Patchwork Stocking In this workshop you will learn to make an adorable personalized Holiday Stocking. Session A: Sunday December 6 11am-1pm $50/workshop SEWING CHILDREN'S CLOTHES Create a one-of-a-kind garment for a child. Session A: Tuesdays, September 1,8,15 & 22 @ 10 am-12 pm Session B: Tuesdays, November 24, December 1, 8 & 15 @ 10am - 12pm $160/session PATTERNMAKING WORKSHOP Design and make your own clothes! In this 2-hour class you will learn the basic principles of making your own sewing patterns, and make a pattern for either an A-line skirt or a T-Shirt that fits your own unique body. With this foundation you'll be able to sew the projects you envision! Basic sewing experience is helpful to get the most from this class. We'll teach you everything you need to know to make a scarf or another basic project. Skills include: casting on, knitting, purling, binding off, a few pattern stitches, and problem-solving. Session A: Wednesdays, August 12, 19, 26 @ 7 pm-9 pm Session B: Wednesdays, October 7, 14 & 21 @ 7-9pm Session C: Wednesdays, October 28, November 4 & 11 @ 7pm - 9pm $120/session PROJECT KNITTING Ready for a new challenge? Stuck on something? This class will help you take your knitting to the next level. Decreasing, increasing, knitting in the round, reading a pattern, piecing your work, blocking--these are just some of the skills you might learn while working on your project. Session A: Wednesdays, August 12, 19, 26 @ 7 pm-9 pm Session B: Wednesdays, October 7, 14 & 21 @ 7-9pm Session C: Wednesdays, October 28, November 4 & 11 @ 7pm - 9pm $120/session FAIR ISLE KNITTING Ever looked at some gorgeous fair isle and thought, "I'd love to make that, but I never could!"? Well, you can! Learn the basics of Fair Isle knitting (also called stranded color-work) while making a pair of winter socks/mittens. This will be the perfect opportunity to make a great holiday gift. Prerequisites: Knitting in the round on double-pointed needles. Session A: Mondays, November 16, 23, 30 & December 7 @ 7 pm-9 pm $160/session LACE KNITTING Learn the basics of lace knitting including cast on techniques, reading a lace chart, and tips to help you correct, as well as avoid, mistakes. Pre-requisites: Decreasing (k2tog, ssk) and yarn-over techniques. Session A: Thursdays, October 15, 22, 29 & November 5 @ 6:30 pm-8:30 pm $160/session TOY KNITTING Make your own knitted toys! This class will teach you the basics of three-dimensional shaping and have you on your way to knitting toys for all the tots you love. Basic knitting skills required. Session A: Thursdays September 17, 24 & October 1 @6:30pm - 8:30pm $120/session SOCK MONKEY Two friends with curly tails have been itching to share this class for ages: a hand knit monkey, made in the style of an old childhood favorite, the sock monkey. This version is taken up a few notches- first, it's easily customized by your choices of yummy worsted weight yarn (you may use any worsted weight yarn you wish), but who wouldn't want to snuggle up to a monkey that was hand knit with love? The making of these primates will be a big ginormous barrel of monkeys! This project will be knit in the round, so please be comfortable knitting on double points. Session A: Sundays October 11, 18, 25 & November 1 @10am-12pm Session B: Saturdays November 21, December 5, 12 & 19 @11am -1pm $160/session KNITTING FINISHING, TIPS & TRICKS Beautifully knit projects can be ruined by sloppy finishing. This class will give you the skills you need to make your knitted garments a success from start to finish. Session A: Thursdays July 31, August 6, 13 @ 7pm - 9pm Session C: Thursdays November 12, 19 & December 3 @ 7pm - 9pm $120/session NEEDLE FELTING Learn the basics of needle felting and let your imagination run wild! This is the perfect opportunity to make holiday ornaments and presents. Session A: Mondays, November 30, December 7 & 14 @ 6:30 pm-8 pm $90/session EMBROIDERY This class is geared towards using embroidery as an artistic medium. You will learn basic stitches and than be guided through your personal creation whether it be a letter, a diary, a thread painting... Each student is invited to create either a traditional sampler following the guidelines provided by history or to create a completely unique piece of their own. With the skills learned you will be able to continue making beautiful pieces of art or simply embellish items of your own. Session A: Monday August 17, 24 & 31 @ 6-8pm $120/session APPLIQUE & EMBROIDERY BEE Learn a variety of basic embroidery stitches and simple applique techniques to create a unique piece of art, decorate your clothing, home, toys or accessories! Each student will have time to work on their own project in class to practice their new skills. (Custom samplers available for class practice or turn simple line drawings into your own custom pattern!) This class is perfect for beginners as well as those who wish to refresh their embroidery skills. Session A: Saturdays October 24, 31 & November 7 @11am - 1pm $120/session MAGIC LOOP KNITTING Learn to knit two socks simultaneously on circular needles. Students should be comfortable knitting in the round to fully benefit from this class. You will learn several ways to cast on and be shown how to knit socks toe-up and cuff-down. craft fair in garrison this weekend

this weekend, august 15 & 16, i will be selling my goods at the Garrison Art Center's Fine Arts and Crafts Fair. i have never been to Garrison before, but i hear it's a lovely setting, right on the hudson river and just steps from the metro north train station. so if you live in the area, come out and say hello! and you city peeps, how about a day-trip up to the country? there are two music stages, tamales and keegan ales, and 95 juried artisans, both traditional and new-fangled. i'll have my own solo booth for the first time ever, and i'm bringing both summer and fall pieces since it's that time of year.

the visionary folks at the GAC reached out to a bunch of us etsians to freshen up the vendor list, so i think it's going to be a really fun mix! mr. smith will be there selling prints of his photos, and my buddy jill will have her scrumptious handspun yarn. looking at the list just now i discovered that my friend julie a.k.a. your secret admiral will be there! also the talented screen-printer alison tauber. some other sellers i'm excited to meet are: cerulean blue ceramics, astulabee, reine, and knit knit.

cal patch will be in town briefly and i’m very happy that she has time to teach this class! if you know how to use a sewing machine, but following a pattern on your own is intimidating— then this class is perfect. or if you just enjoy the structure of a class and sewing with others! we will be using the simplicity 3692 built by wendy pattern. students must arrive at class with pieces already cut out and marked, as this can take up to 2 hours and it will be otherwise impossible to finish the project in the allotted time. you will need to bring your own sewing machine to class. if you can’t, you can email me and I will try to arrange to borrow one for you.

Hudson Valley Seed Library: Pack Art 2010 Call for Art and Submission Guidelines Deadline: July 9, 2009

Hello from Seedy Farm! I'm excited to say that the Hudson Valley Seed Library is going to offer more Art Packs in our next seed catalog. Please help us in our search for new artists to design the covers of our seed packs. If you are an artist, consider sumbittiong your work; if you know any artists, feel free to forward this email to them. The deadline is soon as we need to move quickly in order to give enough time for each selected artist to create his or her work of art. The guidelines are included below and are now posted on the Seed Library website. Thanks for being part of our community effort to save seeds and support artists. Ken

Hudson Valley Seed Library Pack Art 2010: Submission Guidelines
Submission Deadline: July 9, 2009

The Hudson Valley Seed Library is looking for new artwork for the covers of its seed packs. Last year, eleven artists were commissioned to create original pieces for the Seed Library's Art Packs. Each artist brought his or her unique style to the image he or she designed. Mediums included drawing, painting, collage, cut paper, ceramics, and photography. Last year's artists received local and national exposure: on our website, in blogs, magazines, galleries, and in the homes of thousands of gardeners across the region and the country.

This year, HVSL co-founder Ken Greene will be looking for artwork that helps reflect the diversity of the heirloom seeds offered in the catalog. The Seed Library will be selecting up to 16 new artists for its 2010 seed packs. Please feel free to pass along the following guidelines, which describe eligibility and submission requirements and gives details of our selection process. To learn more about HVSL and see last year's artwork, visit www.seedlibrary.org. Thank you for participating; we look forward to seeing the creativity of the many seedy artists in and around the Hudson Valley.

Eligibility: Artists must be part of the greater Hudson Valley region. This includes most of eastern New York (including NYC), western Massachusetts, western Connecticut, and northern New Jersey. We're willing to stretch a little bit, but please have some connection to this region. There are no restrictions as to age, experience, gender, sexuality, nationality, race, physical ability, or education. This is all about diversity.

Media: We are accepting all media except photography. Photos are acceptable as an element in a piece. (We do accept photos for use on our website. If you have a photo of a variety in our catalog, please submit it to mail@seedlibrary.org. If we use it online you get free seeds!)

Awards:
Up to 16 artists may be selected to create artwork for seed packs. Artists whose work is accepted will be paid $100 each for their work. They will also be given credit on the printed packs as well as a bio and link on seedlibrary.org.

Friends. Hot. Cityscape. Mountain Fold is pleased to announce the opening of "Vegetables for Breakfast," a group show of mutated art objects. It is about summer in the city and joyful subversion. The pieces in the show are hybrids. Some are artworks that serve as decoration or furniture, while others began as daily objects, but have been deprived of utility and turned into works of art. The pieces all retain some element of shape or function, but have mutated from their original purpose. The artwork becomes companion. Like living in a colorful, lucid, daydream.

Margaret Lee will display ultra realistic vegetables, cakes and candles on the wall. Joshua Nathanson presents a custom-made chair, specially designed wallpaper and 3D wall sculptures. Shabd Simon-Alexander will exhibit a ceramic vase and stones on tiled pedestals, all equally covered in blotches of color, blurring object and function. Antoine Catala organized this exhibition; he will present a series of painted TVs switched on to your favorite channels; paintings with an ever changing background.

Two new workshops have been added to the ever-changing schedule of sewing classes that we offer at our studio, Home Ec. Take a look:

How to Sew a T-Shirt Workshop
(Taught by Cal Patch)
$50 plus materials
One day only! Sunday, June 14th from 11am - 2pm

Has the thought of sewing knits always intimidated you? Do you think you needed a serger to sew with stretch? Cal will show you that it's easier than you think to make your own knit tops, including several options for finishing necklines.


Skirt Patternmaking Workshop
(Taught by Cal Patch)
$50 plus materials
One day only! Wednesday, June 10th from 6:30 - 8:30pm

This introductory lesson in basic flat pattern techniques will give you the basic skills to draft patterns to fit any body! We will take measurements and make a simple skirt pattern with darts, which can be customized in all sorts of ways to suit your personal style.

Cal Patch is a designer, teacher and the creator of "Hodge Podge Farm", a handmade one-off clothing and accessories line. She is also the author of "Design-it-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified", an instructional book on pattern drafting, due out in September of 2009.

***Basic Japanese Home Cooking***

Saturday, June 20, 12pm-2:30pm
Fee: $60

Learn basics of Japanese home cooking, such as how to cook rice, making dashi (soup stock) and miso soup, about necessary seasonings and common Japanese food products. We'll prepare a savory traditional style meal with fish and vegetables.

***Sushi Master***

Saturday, June 27, 12pm-2:30pm
Fee: $60

Learn how to cook sushi rice (the most important part of sushi!), prepare ingredients, and make your own sushi rolls like Californiarolls, tuna rolls, hand rolls, or veggie rolls of your choice. You'll go home armed with the sushi rolling mat, and become your own sushi chef in your kitchen.

***SOY Cooking for Clueless***

Cooking with soy food can be absolutely effortless. It's great food for even those of you who are clueless in kitchen - you don't even need a real knife to cut a tofu! You'll be introduced to all kinds of tofu and other soy food products, and learn to make delicious and easy soy dishes.

***Japanese Desserts***

Saturday, July 18, 1 pm - 3:30pm
Fee: $50

Traditional Japanese desserts are low or no fat, and they are often vegan. Making rice desserts like mochi and dango are also very easy and fun, like playing with Play-Doh. I may also reveal secrets of tofu pudding.
