LEARN TO SEW with Cal Patch, author of "Design-It-Yourself Clothes"
Do you have a sewing machine in your closet, but have never used it? Or you want to sew, but the last time you stitched anything up was in Home Ec class in 8th grade? If you are looking for a low-commitment class to get acquainted with your machine (or reacquainted with the art of sewing), this is the one for you! In this 3-hour session, you will learn how to thread a machine and wind a bobbin, sew a simple seam, and hem edges. You will make either a pillowcase, tote bag, or drawstring pouch. From this start you'll have a foundation for moving on to all kinds of sewing projects, and your machine may just become your very BEST friend! Note: You can bring your own machine or use one of ours; please let us know when you register. $70

Ever wonder what to do with all those beads and baubles from Grandma's closet? Or do you need yet another reason to keep hoarding broken necklaces and single earrings? Well here's your answer! In just one two hour session you'll learn the basics of jump ring usage, as well as chain layering and clasping. All this will be done with cut apart treasures and loose bead findings. We'll provide the know how and lotsa junk, feel free to bring your own baubles as well. Treehouse's own Siri will show you how it's done! tasty treats and refreshing beverages provided too! $40

Happy New Year from Flirt and Home Ec!

We're so happy to see 2010! So many fantastic things to look forward to! There are many exciting projects on the horizon for this year including youth sewing camps, after school sewing programs, and quilting parties! It's a brand new year and time to pick up a brand new skill! Our extremely popular Build a Bag workshop will serve as a project driven Intro to Sewing Machine class that will have you leaving with your very own reversible cotton tote!

A modified version of our adult Build a Bag for those aspiring sewers age 8+. This 3-hour Saturday workshop is a perfect way to introduce the sewing machine to your blossoming fashion designer!

Altered States: An Alterations Workshop
Four different Saturday sessions available 11:30am to 6pm:

This fantastic one-day alterations workshop created by superwoman Cal Patch and taught by Home Ec guru Patti Gilstrap will teach you the basic tailoring techniques you need to help you revamp the wardrobe you already have. It will also save you big bucks on simple jobs like hemming your jeans. Say bye-bye to your tailor!

SkirtPic Are you looking for a more intermediate class now that you've taken our Build a Bag workshop? Or are you you a self-taught sewer who needs a little help with darts and zippers? Well this is the class for you! This one-day workshop will take you from soup to nuts making your own custom skirt from a commercial pattern. You'll learn to read the pattern, determine the correct sizing, set darts, and sew an invisible zipper. Supplies and some prior experience with a sewing machine are necessary.

Beautifully knit projects can be ruined by sloppy finishing. This class will give you the skills you need to make your knitted garments a success from start to finish.
You will learn how to knit perfect button holes, work a 3 needle bind-off, seaming, picking up mistakes and the Kitchener stitch.

Our Patternmaking Workshop taught by Cal Patch is coming up this Sunday October 25th, and we have something special in store:

Right after the workshop, we will be celebrating the release of Cal's new book Design Yourself Clothes - Patternmaking Simplified. Copies will be available for signing.

Sunday October 25, from 10am-12pm
Design and make your own clothes! In this 2-hour class you will learn the basic principles of making your own sewing patterns, and make a pattern for a T-Shirt that fits your own unique body. SEWING 101
This class will teach you all the basics: how a sewing machine works, cutting from a pattern, and how to sew a simple wrap skirt or 50's style apron. With these techniques, you'll be on your way to stitching up all kinds of projects!

FAIR ISLE KNITTING
Ever looked at some gorgeous fair isle and thought, "I'd love to make that, but I never could!"? Well, you can! Learn the basics of Fair Isle knitting (also called stranded color-work) while making a pair of winter socks/mittens. This will be the perfect opportunity to make a great holiday gift.
Prerequisites: Knitting in the round on double-pointed needles.
Session A: Mondays, November 16, 23, 30 & December 7 @ 7 pm-9 pm

LACE KNITTING
Learn the basics of lace knitting including cast on techniques, reading a lace chart, and tips to help you correct, as well as avoid, mistakes.
Pre-requisites: Decreasing (k2tog, ssk) and yarn-over techniques.

TOY KNITTING
Make your own knitted toys! This class will teach you the basics of three-dimensional shaping and have you on your way to knitting toys for all the tots you love. Basic knitting skills required.

SOCK MONKEY
Two friends with curly tails have been itching to share this class for ages: a hand knit monkey, made in the style of an old childhood favorite, the sock monkey. This version is taken up a few notches- first, it's easily customized by your choices of yummy worsted weight yarn (you may use any worsted weight yarn you wish), but who wouldn't want to snuggle up to a monkey that was hand knit with love?
The making of these primates will be a big ginormous barrel of monkeys!
This project will be knit in the round, so please be comfortable knitting on double points.
Session A: Sundays October 11, 18, 25 & November 1 @10am-12pm

SPINNING
Learn how to spin and design your own yarn on a drop spindle. Class includes an overview of animal and plant fibers, how to card and blend different fiber types and colors, plying instruction, and an introduction to the spinning wheel.

NEEDLE FELTING
Learn the basics of needle felting and let your imagination run wild! This is the perfect opportunity to make holiday ornaments and presents.

EMBROIDERY
This class is geared towards using embroidery as an artistic medium. You will learn basic stitches and than be guided through your personal creation whether it be a letter, a diary, a thread painting...
Each student is invited to create either a traditional sampler following the guidelines provided by history or to create a completely unique piece of their own. With the skills learned you will be able to continue making beautiful pieces of art or simply embellish items of your own.
Session A: Monday August 17, 24 & 31 @ 6-8pm

APPLIQUE & EMBROIDERY BEE
Learn a variety of basic embroidery stitches and simple applique techniques to create a unique piece of art, decorate your clothing, home, toys or accessories!
Each student will have time to work on their own project in class to practice their new skills. (Custom samplers available for class practice or turn simple line drawings into your own custom pattern!)
This class is perfect for beginners as well as those who wish to refresh their embroidery skills.

MAGIC LOOP KNITTING
Learn to knit two socks simultaneously on circular needles. Students should be comfortable knitting in the round to fully benefit from this class.
You will learn several ways to cast on and be shown how to knit socks toe-up and cuff-down. Using your own foot for this session you will be making custom tailord socks and learn to design lace socks.
