Fiber Reactive Dyes with Shabd

Learn the process of Dyeing with Shabd, one of our generations leading dye-artists. In this 3 week class, Shabd will teach you the basic procedures for dyeing with Procion dyes, by immersion, painting and tie-dye, with both cellulose and protein fibers. You will learn various tying, dying and shibori techniques, as well as basic color theory and design concepts for dying. It will be fun, and colorful and bright! Discover the dyer in you and design your own dye patterns! Students will focus on swatches to perfect technique and in the last class work on individual projects.

No experience necessary. Our classes are designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. At TAC, our mission is to provide skills and knowledge for a lifetime! All necessary materials are included for swatch making. Any additional fabrics and materials will need to be supplied by the student based on their vision. Also, we have Open Studio time for students to put their new knowledge to practice.

The Textile Arts Center is a beautiful 3200sf space in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens dedicated to providing support to fiber artists and everyday people interested in working with fibers. TAC holds classes, workshops and special events as well as running open studio hours, hosting gallery exhibits and running an artist in residency program.

Shabd Simon-Alexander is an internationally renowned dye artist. Her namesake clothing line is carried in high-end boutiques internationally. She has been featured in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out, Daily Candy, Nylon, Blackbook, Dossier, Bust Magazine, on innumerable blogs, and was the first person to teach Martha Stewart how to tie-dye!

It's shaping up to be a very busy season. We've just returned from the Middle East where we were guests of Virginia Commonwealth University's Qatar campus. We spent a week with our wonderful hosts and were inspired by the fashion design students there, and had a lovely trunkshow at Cugini Boutique. We promise, we'll upload some photos soon. We will probably put them on Facebook. . .

This weekend we will both be at the Turtle Trunkshow in Boston. Stop by please! Gifts for the first six shoppers so come early! Then we are back in Brooklyn getting ready for the big move. Come to our studio and shop from past seasons, samples, studio furniture, sewing supplies, fabric, and more. If you're lucky you can get a sneak peak at Fall 2011!

Then it's back to the West Coast for some summertime fun. EcoCitizen is cooking up a great day of events to be announced soon so stay tuned. The Green Gala fashion show features Feral Childe and local designers who have been using the gardens as direct inspiration for pieces for the fashion show. And the last stop for now will be the Summer Solstice Celebration at Swarm with music and art all day into the evening; a full lineup of participants to follow shortly.

This workshop will walk you through making a variety of lactoferments including: kim chee, sauerkraut, ginger-carrots and other root crop lactoferments. Bring 2 wide mouth 1 pint glass mason jars with lids if you would like to take home jars of our finished products. Also bring a good cutting knife and a cutting board and the Beyond Organic vegetables will be almost entirely from our farm.
Handouts of recipes will be provided. IMPORTANT!!! Please register a week in advance so we can insure the correct amount of ingredients. This is sure to fill up fast!

In this, our second fermented food workshop, we will harvest Brooklyn’s wild yeasts to make bread rise into a fluffy loaf that is truly delicious! We will show you the ins and outs of making and baking sourdough bread so that you can get started with confidence. We will also cover sourdough pancakes. Delicious! Participants should bring a small jar to take home some sourdough starter.

This third workshop will cover: malting whole grains for superlative home brew beers and will include sources for organic whole grains; preparing herbal tonics and sacred beers with wild dandelion, yarrow, rosemary and others; culturing wild yeasts. Kombucha preparation will also be covered and kombucha “mothers” will be given away to make at home. Handouts of recipes will be provided.

Well you can stop! We will be providing recipes and samples for some of the most often used cleaners. Bring 5 or so small containers (washed take out condiment containers work great) so you can take some samples of what we craft home.

This September, I had the pleasure of participating in a one-night exhibit, "Sleeping with Strangers," sponsored by Salon Ciel. I exhibited embroideries from my Were I So Besotted series alongside the black and white photographs of Robert Gerhardt. The Embroidered Art Journal, PMDA-104-02, runs for 5 weeks on Friday evenings from 6:30-9:30 - November 5 - December 10th. $195/ 15 hours of workshop/studio time. This class is perfect for absolute beginners and more experienced embroiderers. With my guidance and input, each student crafts an art book incorporating embroidery and additional media of his/her choice. After mastering a dozen stitches for decorative and practical use, we will explore a range of methods for interpreting photographs as embroideries, drawing with thread, and transferring images and text onto fabric.

The goal is for each student to embark on a personal project that incorporates embroidery and narrative. Mixed media projects are encouraged.

Previous students have worked on a wide range of pursuits: one is in the process of making a book for her soon-to-be grandchild, another did preparatory work for exhibition pieces for a show. Students experimented with non-traditional materials, like sewing on bubble wrap and other forms of packaging. Some created sculptural "landscapes" by manipulating fabric and thread. Others reinterpreted their own drawings and illustrations using fabric and thread.

The possibilities for this class are endless...

Tuition is $195 for 5 weeks (15 hours of class time). Supplies are minimal - I provide as much as possible, which you can supplement with materials of your choice.

This mini-fair is a hands-on exploration of knots, knitting, and string figures. Visitors can view short math films that explore the geometry surrounding knots (including the well-known short Not Knot) and engage in an informal discussion of knot theory with mathematician Philip Ording. Artist Sabrina Gschwandtner will conduct a lab for stalled handcraft projects: bring any knitted, crocheted, sewn, embroidered, or woven undertaking that is in limbo, and receive consultation for moving forward. Inoli Murphy, mathematician and author of Murphy's String Figures: Teaching Math with String Figures, will demonstrate and discuss the ancient art of string figures.

The Large Hadron Collider is the world's largest and highest energy particle accelerator, and lies in a tunnel 175 meters beneath the Franco-Swiss border. Physicists hope that the LHC will help answer the most fundamental questions in physics, concerning the basic laws governing the deep structure of space and time.

"Time Tunnel" proposes a collision of art-making traditions with the uncertainty of time and space. The collective unconscious is infused with ritual and mysticism, and has become dislodged and reinterpreted. The reformed amalgam of paint, wax, clay, sand, and plaster that is presented here are artifacts of this convergence. Totem poles are now made of monster masks, images of prairie women have paint splattered on them, Roman relics are fractured, sand mandalas are blurred, and our spirit animals have been unleashed into the wild.

Mira Billotte is an artist and musician (White Magic) interested in the "Music of the Spheres"; the belief that the planets of the solar system and stars beyond each create a tone in perfect harmony. Mira's installations and sand mandalas reference transcendental rituals practiced throughout time. John Brattin is a multi-media artist who uses sculpture, drawing, and painting to further inform his personal stories and myths which are eventually made into short films. He is currently working on a western. Eric Copeland's collages are visual remnants of his pondering of the moon, phallices, faces, and piles of trash. His abstracted compositions use repetition and disjunction much like the music he is known for making. Jeff Davis's two-dimensional work usually takes on "mysteriously ceremonial and often orgiastic configurations". His totem-like structures are made from casting rubber halloween masks with multi-colored wax. Spencer Herbst's dadaist videos are a microscopic look into our everyday surroundings. His magnification of objects strewn about his apartment, salt crystals lying on a countertop, and wood grain in the floorboards are examined so closely that they take on an other-worldly reality. Pali Kashi's work presents the natural world through the power symbol of the triangle, which grants the viewer a new kind of portal into frozen moments of time. James Kendi's photographic process begins with asking people what their spirit animal is. He then creates a mask of that animal and photographs his subjects wearing the mask in the animal's natural environment. Adam Marnie is a mixed media artist interested in the sculptural presentation of images. By splicing traditional still life painting with pornography, he can sharply pierce us with flashes of flesh where we are expecting to see stems and roses. Keith McCulloch's watercolors meander through a maze-like interior filled with strange yet familiar apparitions. Rich Porter depicts an array of primordial figures, focusing on the unseen molecular network between our bodies and landscape. Leif Ritchey is an archaeologist of the sublime accumulations of his everyday surroundings. The objects he extracts from puddles near a sewer or broken glass hidden under a bush are taken back to his studio to be corralled into his futuristic vision. Arik Roper's work depicts a fantastical reality filled with mythical warriors, smoky terrain, and decaying skulls. His paintings breathe life into our uncharted history. Ruby Sky Stiler rummages the storage cellar of historical artifacts to incorporate classic iconography into the context of her own relics. Her fragmented reliefs of ancient Greek and Roman imagery question the potency of sculpting the human form. Francine Spiegel's performance, The Curse of the Century Old Egg, which took place at Deitch Projects this last fall, was a literal mish-mosh of the past and present. The eerie happening gathered six women together in a curious ritual of transformation. The repetition of slime-dumping and paint-slinging turned these prairie-esque women, in ruffled regalia, into monstrous beasts over the course of an hour.
