embroidery news from Iviva Olenick

Dear friends,

This September, I had the pleasure of participating in a one-night exhibit, "Sleeping with Strangers," sponsored by Salon Ciel. I exhibited embroideries from my Were I So Besotted series alongside the black and white photographs of Robert Gerhardt. While the show was fleeting, the experience was recorded in a video, where you can see and hear Robert and I talk about our work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGEoPOtZqHk.

You can also read a review of "Sleeping with Strangers" here: http://gallerycrawl.typepad.com/gallery_crawl/2010/10/recent-fall-shows-in-brief.html. Thanks to James Kao for writing this article, and Salon Ciel for hosting the exhibit.

For those of you in the New York area, my latest installment of the Embroidered Art Journal class at Pratt CCPS in Manhattan is coming up very soon. The Embroidered Art Journal, PMDA-104-02, runs for 5 weeks on Friday evenings from 6:30-9:30 - November 5 - December 10th. $195/ 15 hours of workshop/studio time. This class is perfect for absolute beginners and more experienced embroiderers. With my guidance and input, each student crafts an art book incorporating embroidery and additional media of his/her choice. You can sign up via Pratt's web site, http://my.pratt.edu, or by calling 212-647-7199. I hope to see some of you there! Please feel free to share this information with friends.

Finally, if you live in Brooklyn, you can see my embroidered art work at Muriel Guepin Gallery on Bergen Street near Smith Street, steps away from the F/G to Bergen Street. The address is 47 Bergen Street, and the gallery sits beside the Invisible Dog, an event, performance, and exhibition space.

Thanks to all of you for your ongoing interest in my work.

with love,

Iviva

embroidered journal class @ pratt

wow! this embroidered journaling class looks amazing... here's what iviva has to say about it:

I am excited about my imminent 5-week embroidery workshop at Pratt, The Embroidered Art Journal. I hope some of you will join me, or pass the word on to friends who may be looking for a creative way to spend Wednesdays in April and May. Here are the details:

The Embroidered Art Journal, PMDA-104
5 Wednesdays at Pratt Center for Continuing and Professional Studies
144 West 14th Street, near 7th Avenue
April 21st - May 19th, 6:30-9:30pm

Registration:
212-647-7199

After mastering a dozen stitches for decorative and practical use, we will explore a range of methods for interpreting photographs as embroideries, drawing with thread, and transferring images and text onto fabric.

The goal is for each student to embark on a personal project that incorporates embroidery and narrative. Mixed media projects are encouraged.

Previous students have worked on a wide range of pursuits: one is in the process of making a book for her soon-to-be grandchild, another did preparatory work for exhibition pieces for a show. Students experimented with non-traditional materials, like sewing on bubble wrap and other forms of packaging. Some created sculptural "landscapes" by manipulating fabric and thread. Others reinterpreted their own drawings and illustrations using fabric and thread.

The possibilities for this class are endless...

Tuition is $195 for 5 weeks (15 hours of class time). Supplies are minimal - I provide as much as possible, which you can supplement with materials of your choice.

Also coming up this spring is the Affordable Art Fair, May 6-9th...More details to come!

With very best wishes,

classes in beacon, ny

Clay Wood and Cotton

shopaboutnotebookvisit uscontact us

Hello and Happy February!

Hope you're all staying warm and cozy in this chilly winter weather. We've been busy working on our new shop blog, Notebook, and putting together a full schedule of classes for next two months, including Embroidery with Cal Patch, two classes for kids, a 4-hour Bookbinding workshop with the very talented Nic Taylor of Thunderwing Press, and a reprisal of our popular Knitting 101 class.

Read all about it below...

Join us Saturday, February 13th, from 10:30-12:30, to learn the basics of embroidery with our special guest instructor
Cal Patch
. Practice your new skills on an original Valentine's Day pattern created by Cal (sneak peek above).

Cost: $40 + $5 materials fee

A 50% deposit is required to hold your place in a class. Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the class in order to receive store credit for your deposit. Give us a call or stop by the shop to reserve your spot!

About the Instructor:
Cal Patch has been a maker since she was a Girl Scout in the seventies. She sews, crochets, spins, embroiders, knits, prints, makes patterns, dyes… hence the name of her label: hodge podge. Cal has taught all of these subjects for the past ten years, and loves showing people new skills. After seventeen years of being a New York City dweller, Cal recently relocated to the Catskills where she plans to be a crafty farmer. Her first book, Design-It-Yourself Clothes: Patternmaking Simplified, is out now from Potter Craft. You can see what she’s up to at hodgepodgefarm.net.

Classes are held at Clay Wood & Cotton in Beacon, NY. More information can be found here.

We just launched a new feature on ClayWoodandCotton.com.

We've revamped and spruced up our News + Events section into a full-on blog, which we're calling our Notebook. It currently has all the info on our classes and events, and will also come to include tutorials, recipes, tidbits about our artists, and other goodies.

Please check it out and leave us a comment telling us what you think, what you'd like to see, or anything else you'd like to say!

embroidered love notes

Dear friends,

Hope you are enjoying the snow or are someplace warm and sunny.

In anticipation of Valentine's Day, and really, for any day, a new selection of more than a dozen of my hand-embroidered notes are available at Muriel Guepin Gallery in Cobble Hill Brooklyn. Stitched in my simple handwriting, these notes combine equal parts humour and desire. Phrases like "I carry you with me everywhere. You will always have a place inside me," adorn small pieces of antique lace and inherited textiles.

To visit Muriel Guepin Gallery:
F/G to Bergen Street
47 Bergen Street between Smith and Court Sts
Open Wednesday - Saturday 11-7pm
Sunday 12noon - 5pm
http://www.murielguepingallery.com

A happy Valentine's Day and all days to you all.

love,

Iviva
