ABOUT THE NEW COLLECTION: For Spring/Summer 2012: THE AQUAKNOTS, Feral Childe explores the ocean deep. This season’s original prints feature the Feral Childe duo as deep sea divers among plankton, exotic coral and aquatic horses. Reflecting our process-based fine arts background, these prints were developed by combining wildly varied image-making techniques: for example, the Flowerstripe print is a collage of shapes cut from bright, individually painted watercolors, while the Plankton print is a cyanotype made by exposing a 3D-painting to light sensitive fabric (the painting was made on various layers of clear acetate sheets combining paint and meticulous, intricately-cut plankton-like frosted Mylar shapes). We worked side by side on these prints, drawing on the same sheet of paper, as in the ball-point pen derived print called Wipeout, which shows several versions of Jacques Cousteau's famous diving saucer.  We started this print while waiting for the shuttle to the airport, as we sat in the lobby of the hotel in Doha, Qatar where we were visiting artists at Virginia Commonwealth University last spring.

From our take on summer basics to signature statement pieces, this season’s Feral Childe styles emphasize easy summer ensembles. The Spring 12 collection is on point with trends such as printed shorts (Anemone Shorts), feminine baseball jackets (Cousteau Jacket), stripes, a bright palette of corals (hello Pantone Tangerine Tango!) -- yet always with our timeless and unique twist on construction details such as shaped pockets, folded collars, creative tucks and pleating, extended placket, and more. Spring 2012’s fabrics include fine Italian metallic cotton, glazed linen, organic cotton, Cupro, Hempcel, and silk. At Feral Childe we strive for more sustainable production, using organic, sustainable, artisan-made, or repurposed fabrics; and manufacture everything in New York City.

learn textile dyeing with shabd!

Fiber Reactive Dyes with Shabd

Learn the process of Dyeing with Shabd, one of our generations leading dye-artists. In this 3 week class, Shabd will teach you the basic procedures for dyeing with Procion dyes, by immersion, painting and tie-dye, with both cellulose and protein fibers. You will learn various tying, dying and shibori techniques, as well as basic color theory and design concepts for dying. It will be fun, and colorful and bright! Discover the dyer in you and design your own dye patterns! Students will focus on swatches to perfect technique and in the last class work on individual projects.

No experience necessary. Our classes are designed to focus on a learned skill rather than a final product. At TAC, our mission is to provide skills and knowledge for a lifetime! All necessary materials are included for swatch making. Any additional fabrics and materials will need to be supplied by the student based on their vision. Also, we have Open Studio time for students to put their new knowledge to practice.

The Textile Arts Center is a beautiful 3200sf space in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens dedicated to providing support to fiber artists and everyday people interested in working with fibers. TAC holds classes, workshops and special events as well as running open studio hours, hosting gallery exhibits and running an artist in residency program.

Shabd Simon-Alexander is an internationally renowned dye artist. Her namesake clothing line is carried in high-end boutiques internationally. She has been featured in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out, Daily Candy, Nylon, Blackbook, Dossier, Bust Magazine, on innumerable blogs, and was the first person to teach Martha Stewart how to tie-dye!

3 Session
Sundays 2:00 - 6:00PM, October 16 - October 30

the NERVE!

this is a topic near and dear to my heart, and i was outraged to read this e-mail from SAPLINGs Alice and Moriah of Feral Childe this morning! please read, and boycott Forever 21. this is one of the many reasons why i swore off buying clothing from mass market chain retail stores around 7 years ago... -cal

Dear friends,

A few weeks ago, we discovered one of our prints appearing on garments manufactured by Forever 21--a large, major retailer. Feral Childe's artwork was used without our permission or knowledge, and appears on multiple styles sold in the Forever 21 stores and on their website. Some styles have even received press. The print is our hand-drawn Teepees, widely featured in Feral Childe's Fall 2009 Collection School Play. Many of you have leggings, jeans, and dresses or other garments featuring our Teepees. The Forever 21 garments appear to reproduce Teepees exactly. If compared side by side you would not be able to distinguish any difference in the artwork.

Feral Childe has always strived to bring you the very best in innovative, ethically-produced clothing that is made to last. When we first started out we could only dream about the day when we'd be able to design our own fabrics. With the support of our community--friends, family, collaborators, showroom, suppliers, contractors, and our loyal customers--we have grown the business to be able to offer our very original, very personal hand-drawn textile designs to you each season.

For the past fifteen years, we have dedicated ourselves to this artistic partnership. Feral Childe's designs are the product of these years invested in our deep friendship and artistic training. We create textile designs reflecting a singular aesthetic voice. It can take months for us to develop Feral Childe's prints. The creative process begins with the two of us sitting side by side drawing and painting together and continues as we comment, critique and edit until we perfect the print design.

Through our hard work, Feral Childe has been sold in more than 70 independent retailers in the US and Japan. We feel fortunate to have weathered the recession and to be able to continue to do what we love. Even with our successes, we are a tiny company. Each wholesale account is a personal relationship nurtured over the course of seasons. Each customer we meet inspires us to design something better for you next time. If you are reading this, we could not have come this far without you. It simply is not fair that another party profits from artwork that was not created by them, was not their idea, and does not belong to them.

Forever 21 has unfairly profited from Feral Childe's years of artistic development. Without any consideration or respect for the origin of the artwork, Forever 21's mass reproduction of our textile design without our permission is extremely unethical, and in direct violation of the law. It's frustrating that this enormous company, with over a billion dollars a year in revenues, would dare to poach the artistic creations of a small company such as ours.

Our Teepees design is protected by law, registered with the US Copyright Office. When we sent Forever 21 our cease and desist letter regarding this copyright infringement, Forever 21 denied liability and even stated that perhaps Feral Childe copied the design from another source. Once we received that outrageous response, our attorneys filed a lawsuit, currently pending in Federal Court in Los Angeles. We hope that you might show your support for Feral Childe by spreading the word. Tell your friends, or forward, comment, post, retweet the articles below. We thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Alice & Moriah

new summer paintings from Armas Design

There is so much goodness in this new batch of paintings. I have been inspired by summer time! Grilled peaches and mint juleps and mesquite bbq breezes...obsessed with food much? In any case, I hope you enjoy these paintings full of movement, and painted with love. Some are jubilant exclamations of color! Some are thoughtful and full of light and space. They are meant to be hung in any direction you like, and they look even better in groups.

I would love to show you all my brand-spanking-new studio space, but it is still being gussied up, and would prefer to display only it's sexy pictures. Don't forget to check out the blog for all your voyeuring needs.

If you make it this far down the newsletter, you deserve a treat. Hows about 10% off with coupon code TENFINGERDISCOUNT. Or maybe I just need another julep.

NEW CITIES, NEW STORES!
the latest addition to stores where you can find Feral Childe's Spring 2011 Collection.
More to come soon!

It's shaping up to be a very busy season. We've just returned from the Middle East where we were guests of Virginia Commonwealth University's Qatar campus. We spent a week with our wonderful hosts and were inspired by the fashion design students there, and had a lovely trunkshow at Cugini Boutique. We promise, we'll upload some photos soon. We will probably put them on Facebook. . .

This weekend we will both be at the Turtle Trunkshow in Boston. Stop by please! Gifts for the first six shoppers so come early! Then we are back in Brooklyn getting ready for the big move. Come to our studio and shop from past seasons, samples, studio furniture, sewing supplies, fabric, and more. If you're lucky you can get a sneak peak at Fall 2011!
Then it's back to the West Coast for some summertime fun. EcoCitizen is cooking up a great day of events to be announced soon so stay tuned. The Green Gala fashion show features Feral Childe and local designers who have been using the gardens as direct inspiration for pieces for the fashion show. And the last stop for now will be the Summer Solstice Celebration at Swarm with music and art all day into the evening; a full lineup of participants to follow shortly.

It's great to get noticed -- we've had some nice press lately; both online and in print. Check it out at EcoSalon and the online version of TimeOut New York.
That's it for now. Thanks for reading. Not able to make it to events? Email us about those styles you've had your eye on and we will help you locate your nearest retailer. Feel free to ask us questions about sizing or fit. Also, we're seeking a body decoupage assistant!

ABOUT SPRING 2011: For Spring 2011, join Feral Chide on an expedition to Tarquinia, an ancient Roman city known for its Etruscan frescoes and mosaics. Dreaming of this seaside civilization, Feral Childe created watercolor collages for new digital silk prints depicting divers, revelers, and artisans. The silks, textured organic cotton knits, Hempcel linen and other fabrics are lasercut, looped and pleated into a wearable catalog of amphora, fish, birds and plant life in earthy and vibrant colors. Made in NYC's Historic Garment Center.

Permaculture classes in Brooklyn

MAKE IT YOURSELF!

Who says you need a homestead to practice Permaculture! We'll show you how to live the good life by putting your hands and kitchen to work. We think our bodies deserve the best and as permaculture hedonists believe that what we create with our hands is far superior to anything you can buy on the shelves of any store.

Last year we ran this series of lactoferment classes along with a Handcrafted Beauty series to great success. Many sold out fast with our cap at 10 students for each class. We checked our busy teaching and parenting schedules and set aside some dates to present these learning opportunities once again. Join us for these three fermented foods classes that will increase your vitality as well as your self-sufficiency. Come learn why fermented foods are so incredibly nutritious and how they can fit into your life.

The Handmade Beauty series will take the mystery out of formulating your own safe and cheap beauty necessities suitable for your gender of choice. We will explore a host of different ingredients from ones found in your kitchen cupboard to the more exotic ones found via the internet. This series will now include household cleaners as well. All of these will be great for gift giving!

Start crafting today and share your creations with friends and family!

$30 per class OR $25 if you register for two or more classes!

To register email back at this address dreikycaprice@gmail.com

Lactoferments
Saturday, December 11th
6:00- 8:00-pm $30

This workshop will walk you through making a variety of lactoferments including: kim chee, sauerkraut, ginger-carrots and other root crop lactoferments. Bring 2 wide mouth 1 pint glass mason jars with lids if you would like to take home jars of our finished products. Also bring a good cutting knife and a cutting board and the Beyond Organic vegetables will be almost entirely from our farm.
Handouts of recipes will be provided. IMPORTANT!!! Please register a week in advance so we can insure the correct amount of ingredients. This is sure to fill up fast!

Sourdough Bread
Sunday, December 12th
6:00-8:00pm $30

In this, our second fermented food workshop, we will harvest Brooklyn’s wild yeasts to make bread rise into a fluffy loaf that is truly delicious! We will show you the ins and outs of making and baking sourdough bread so that you can get started with confidence. We will also cover sourdough pancakes. Delicious! Participants should bring a small jar to take home some sourdough starter.

Handcrafting Home Brews
Friday, December 17th
6:00- 8:00 pm $30

This third workshop will cover: malting whole grains for superlative home brew beers and will include sources for organic whole grains; preparing herbal tonics and sacred beers with wild dandelion, yarrow, rosemary and others; culturing wild yeasts. Kombucha preparation will also be covered and kombucha “mothers” will be given away to make at home. Handouts of recipes will be provided.

Handmade Beauty Part 1 and 2
Saturday, December 18th
Part 1 - 2-4pm $30
Sunday, December 19th
Part 2 - 2-4pm $30

In this class we will craft a variety of body care products made from ingredients easily found in your kitchen cabinet or local heath food store. You will expand your knowledge of herbs, save money and feel your beautiful best by making and using your own handmade beauty products. Are you spending wads of cash on eco-household cleaners? Well you can stop! We will be providing recipes and samples for some of the most often used cleaners. Bring 5 or so small containers (washed take out condiment containers work great) so you can take some samples of what we craft home.
It would be great if people could let me know what they are interested in learning how to make. While I would like to cover it all in one class it just takes too much time!
