another JUNE class!

cal and i have added a new class to my june schedule. this one-day workshop will take you through the steps of built by wendy pattern #3835, and you will have a completed garment by the end of the day. last month’s class was a blast, and I’m looking forward to another! yummy vegetarian lunch included
(if i do say so myself!).

see the pattern here.

try to email me right away if you would like to sign up— spots are limited. and feel free to write me with any questions.

JUNE SEWING TOP/DRESS WORKSHOP WITH CAL PATCH
intermediate level

one 5-hour workshop
11am – 4pm
saturday, june 13th
$125 + supplies

cal patch will be in town briefly and i’m very happy that she has time to teach this class! if you’re like me, and know how to use a sewing machine, but have always been intimidated to try a pattern on your own— then this class is perfect. we will be using the simplicity 3835 built by wendy pattern. students must arrive at class with pieces already cut out and marked, as this can take up to 2 hours and it will be otherwise impossible to finish the project in the allotted time. you will need to bring your own sewing machine to class. if you can’t, you can email me and I will try to arrange to borrow one for you.

hi saplings!

here is the info for my new class schedule. if you know anyone who might be interested, please pass along!
also, if any of you are interested in teaching a class in my studio i would love to discuss it.

--lena

last month’s classes were a lot of fun... thanks again to cal patch for teaching the tunic sewing workshop during her trip down from the farm. hopefully cal will become a regular guest teacher. we’re already discussing a build by wendy coat class (which might have to wait ‘til the fall when coat wearing is more appropriate) and a patternmaking class.
my studio has been quiet for the month of may, and now i'm excited to be announcing june classes. i’ll be teaching intro to screen printing again. and i’m very excited to be offering a new sewing class taught by wendy hanson. wendy and i met in one of my screen printing class, and i was always ohhing and ahhing over her clothing and style. she is the senior patternmaker for tibi. we came up with a class that i’m thrilled to take myself. it will probably fill up quickly, so email me right away if you’d like to sign up.

below are details for the june classes, which are held in my fort greene, brooklyn studio.
to sign up, email lena [at] lenacorwin.com

SCREEN PRINTING I

this class covers my favorite methods for screen printing, starting with the basics (no experience required). learn to print on fabric and/or paper, using your own designs. if you have a particular printing project in mind (printed pillowcases, tote bags, etc), we can plan out the design, materials, and printing. the bottom two photos are projects by students from previous classes.

four 1-1/2 hour classes
tuesday evenings 6/9, 6/16, 6/23, 6/30

6:00- 7:30pm

$250 + supplies (approx. $50)

SEWING PERFECT BASICS

i always see simple styles of clothing in my favorite stores that i wish i could sew myself. this class is an introduction to sewing your own wardrobe basics! wendy hanson will be teaching the class. she is the senior patternmaker for tibi, and has also worked for daryl k, donna karan, and vivienne westwood. the first class will focus on designing your own garments, choosing two of three styles (top, dress, and skirt), and learning how to choose fabrics, add details, and make a pattern. in the subsequent classes, we will sew the two garments (basic sewing knowledge and your own machine required). the top two photos show the styles that we will be working with (created by wendy just for this class).

four 1-1/2 hour classes

thursday evenings 6/4, 6/11, 6/18, 6/25
6:00- 7:30pm

$275 + supplies (approx. $50)

feral childe events

Dear Friends and Family,
We hope this email finds you well! You are cordially invited to:

A Trunkshow featuring FERAL CHILDE and CIRCADIAN STUDIOS

at BACKSPACE
Saturday 5/16,
Noon-7PM
351 Divisadero St @ Oak, San Francisco, CA

Please join us for a very special trunkshow* with FERAL CHILDE and CIRCADIAN STUDIOS! Alice of Feral Childe and Deanna of Circadian Studios will be on hand all day at BACKSPACE to present their Spring 2009 collections. The Backspace Trunkshow will be the only opportunity to view the full range of of the YOSEMITE Collection in the Bay Area. We will also have informal modeling and libations starting around 4pm. We look forward to seeing you!

As you may already know, FERAL CHILDE is newly bi-coastal -- Alice is a recent transplant from NYC. The Spring 2009 Collection YOSEMITE was inspired by Alice's first camping trip shortly after her move to the West Coast (and a subsequent camping trip to Big Sur with Moriah)! We will have selections from YOSEMITE as well as a sale on oldies but goodies from seasons past.

CIRCADIAN STUDIOS, the jewelry collection by San Francisco designer Deanna Abney, draws inspiration from a love of the simple yet remarkable designs found in nature and a personal resonance with living in balance with life’s natural cycles. In her jewelry you will find representations of such elegance, movement, flow, organic shapes, tinkling sounds, balance within asymmetry, draping waterfall effects of chains, sparkles, glints, and warm metals against the skin.

BACKSPACE features the best of the Bay Area's fashion talent, including Hanuman, Deanna Bratt, Ric Rac, Ginne, Liron, Coma & Cotton, Chacahbraca, Nicky Garcia and jewelry by Venus Superstar, Circadian Studios, Fluidance, Vanessa Gade, Tessa Kemp, Frolic, Kocoon and Zachary Pryor. Backspace presents emerging designers alongside well-known lines such as Grey Ant and Prairie Underground, and features rotating exhibitions by local artists -- creating a truly unique creative atmosphere.

*A trunk show is a great way for you to meet the designer and view the ENTIRE COLLECTION FOR ONE DAY ONLY, give feedback and possibly scoop up a one of a kind piece. This is a rare chance, as no store carries a designer's entire collection and it is a great way to see pieces that the store may not normally have but you may love!!!

Please add these additional dates to your calendar!

Five Reasons to Shop Handmade This Weekend:
May 9 + 10 10am-4pm
The Bell House, Brooklyn

Yes! The Spring Handmade Cavalcade is this weekend!
  1. Buying Handmade makes for better gift-giving.

  3. Support an artist or crafter directly.
  4. Recipients of handmade gifts get something one-of-a-kind and made with care and attention that can be seen and touched.
  5. Handmade goods are the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.

On May 9 and 10, cast your vote against the ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing. Come to the Bell House for the Spring Handmade Cavalcade and shop handmade. Support great local crafters like Dirty Loves Clean, AdornmentsNYC,
